Singapore Dumpling Festival

22nd June was the Dumpling Festival in Singapore. Our Freshwater Bay Rotarian in Singapore, Sheila Cheng, again volunteered at the Anglican Care Centre Simei, running another hands-on workshop, this time on wrapping glutinous rice into dumplings.

Sheila showed a short video so that they had a visual understanding of the entire process of wrapping the glutinous rice with various ingredients. While watching the video, a few of the participants commented: “What’s so difficult, it’s just wrapping only.” Sheila then gave a physical demonstration before they had a go at dumpling wrapping.

During the hands-on session, those who had commented earlier realized it was not as easy as they initially thought. In fact, it was too challenging for them to wrap the dumplings, however they enjoyed trying to do so immensely, with a lot of laughter ensuing. It was interesting to see them trying creative ways to wrap and tie the dumplings, even if in vain. They admitted defeat graciously.

Dumpling making is a lengthy process, so Sheila pre-made some 30 pieces at home, which she steamed on arrival at the centre so that the members and staff could enjoy her home-made dumplings at the end of the session. It was a memorable Dumpling Workshop.

Sheila extends her thanks to Randy and Jerry, the two dedicated Health Care Assistants who have been assigned to assist her session whenever members need support. Thank you also to Sheila’s husband LAU for photo editing and her son Wen Hsin for creating the video.
