Dementia Projects

Dementia has become a focus of our club, and as a result we’ve attracted a number of Alzheimer’s researchers and music therapists as members.

Presentations at our meetings about Dementia have included:

Supporting Memory Cafe

With the aid of a Rotary Foundation District Grant, two tear drop banners and 2,000 forget-me-not dementia support lapel pins were organised by the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay for the Forget-me-Not Memory Cafe meetings, with the pins to be provided to dementia sufferers so that they can be easily identified in public.

The next phase of this project is to educate the public that wearers of the Forget-me-not lapel pin are people living with dementia, so that extra care and attention is given to them if they become lost, or want to spend generously on their credit card etc.

Music for Dementia

We have assisted with a variety of music therapy investigations, including the 6 week MARVEL project, provision of headphones with pre-loaded music to dementia suffers, and supporting research at the Centre for Healthy Ageing at Murdoch University.

Dancing with Memories Book

Dancing with Memories is a book for 5-8 year olds written by Sally Yule in conjunction with Professor Ralph Martins and Maggie Beer which introduces children to family and people living with dementia. We held a book launch on 2nd June 2021 and have distributed over 220 copies of the book to primary schools for their libraries.
