Youth Development

We support a variety of camps, clubs and other regular events and programs to help educate our youth and develop and reward their good citizenship and leadership.

Primary School Awards

We present a variety of Awards (comprising of a certificate and book prize) to children at 8 local primary schools, selected by their teachers and/or peers, at their end of year assembly.

These awards include citizenship awards, all rounder awards, science awards, numeracy awards, and caring awards, of which some of the caring awards are specifically given to children who have completed the Seedlings program.

Seedlings

The Seedlings Program targets children aged 7-11 years. It has been designed to cultivate a positive school community where children grow with good character and care for their peers, family and the wider community.

Seedlings assists children to develop a selfless mindset and teaches them that there are feel good emotions, thoughts and actions that can positively impact their well being and give them a more positive outlook on life. When children realise the good feelings that come with being a caring and contributing member of their community they are less likely to bully or be bullied.

The Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay has sponsored a number of teachers to undertake training.

Santos Science Experience

The Santos Science Experience is a fun 3 or 4 days of science at various universities around Perth for Year 9 and 10 students, typically during the summer school holidays.

Each program is designed to provide those who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work.

Our Rotary club sponsors a number of students from nearby schools to attend each year.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN)

Every year we sponsor Year 10 students to attend this weekend-long camp aimed at developing leadership and interpersonal skills in those who are typically over-looked, being neither over-achievers or under-achievers, but have the potential for leadership if given some encouragement.

Our local RYPEN is usually held in May, and offers small group sessions on goal setting, problem solving, communication and self-esteem and short seminars on public speaking and job seeking.

Rotary WA Driver Education (RWADE)

Originally known as Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA), this day long event for Year 10 students is designed to influence young people’s attitude to road safety BEFORE they obtain their driver’s licence.

Each year our club holds a Driver Education day for students from Newman College and the Shenton College Deaf Education Centre.

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)

The National Youth Science Forum is a 2 week residential program held in Canberra every January for students who are about to enter year 12 to be exposed to different career options in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) fields (though with covid, recent camps have been held locally in Perth).

The program is very competitive and numbers limited for both intakes each year; we have successfully nominated a candidate almost every year since our inception.

Applications open in March and close in May.

If you are in Year 11 and are passionate about science, you can find out more about how to apply.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

RYLA is a week long camp held every January for 18 to 25 year olds to further develop their leadership skills. The Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay sponsors 1 or more suitable candidates every year.

Applications close in mid November.

Camp Opportunity

Camp Opportunity is a week-long live-in camp in late January for an equal number of able bodied “buddies” and physically handicapped “campers” aged 18 to 35 years for a week of adventure as they mix and interact in a fun atmosphere to share new friendships and experiences.

Our Rotary Club sponsors 1-2 attendees every year.
