Project Palu

Appeal for donations for building permanent accommodation for those displaced by the earthquake/tsunami/liquefaction in Palu, Central Sulawesi.

On 28 September 2018 a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Palu, a coastal city of about 330,000 residents, on Sulawesi in Indonesia.  The earthquake triggered a tsunami over 3 meters high and the largest liquefaction event ever recorded historically. While the official death toll was 4,340 people, relief workers placed the total number, including those whose bodies were never recovered, at between 20,000 and 30,000 individuals.

Over two years after the event thousands of displaced people remain in temporary accommodation. While the government has authorised over 3000 dwellings to be built, those who cannot provide proof of ownership of a house destroyed by the earthquake, tsunami or liquefaction cannot qualify for the government housing scheme, leaving them no place to go once the temporary accommodation is disassembled.

The Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay has partnered with Tadulako University, the Donggala District government, and NGO Tiga Dimensi Persahabatan to find a location and design simple houses costing $4000 AUD each to build.

We need to raise at least $80,000 AUD to initiate a community of 20 houses on the land made available by the district government.  We are asking for support from friends here to bring this project to fruition.

Donations can be made through the Rotary Australia World Community Service website. Full instructions are given once you click DONATE.

All donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE and a receipt is sent to you by email.
